Every year on the 10th of December, the City Hall of Stockholm fills with more than 1,300 prominent guests from all over the world. The venue is the Nobel banquet; the purpose is to celebrate the Nobel Prize winners who in accordance with the will of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, have done the greatest contributions to mankind.
Apart from being the home of great festivities, the City Hall is the political heart of the city. The 101 council members (more than 50 percent are women!) gather in the council chamber to decide the city’s future. The Golden Hall where more than 18 million allegorical golden mosaic tiles tell the story of one thousand years of Swedish history.
On your scenic drive towards the Vasa Museum you pass some of Stockholm’s most famous sights: the imposing panoramic view of Fjällgatan, the Old Town with the Royal Palace, the National Museum of Fine Arts, the exclusive NK department store, the Opera House and the famous Royal Dramatic Theatre, just to mention a few. Arriving at the Vasa Museum you will hear the story of one of the greatest military disasters in Swedish history. After fifteen minutes of her maiden voyage, the greatest warship ever to have sailed in the Baltic Sea capsized and sank like a stone. Equipped with sixtyfour cannons dispersed over only two battery decks she was simply too top heavy. A disaster at the time but an intriguing story in the present, this unique opportunity to travel back in time should not be missed. We return to Stokholm docks for 01.00PM (1300)
