DAY 1  Depart the United States via overnight flight to Barcelona.

DAY 2  Upon arrival, we will meet our driver and guide and transfer to our hotel in central Barcelona.

DAY 3  Our morning starts with a visit to the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, a short stop at the Cathedral and continuing on to visit the vestiges of Roman Barcelona that are found below one of Barcelona’s city Museums. Free time for lunch.  After lunch our walk transports us in time from the Gothic age to the start of Modernism, past some of the most emblematic buildings and establishments of the Modernism era, including the Ramblas and the Boqueria Market, Picasso’s Barcelona and ending with a visit to the Picasso Museum.  Overnight Barcelona.

DAY 4  Motorcoach travel today as we continue exploring Barcelona*s Modernism era.  Today we especially pay tribute to one of the greatest architects of this era, Antonio Gaudi.  We begin taking a ride through Graci with our first stop to visit the casa Mila, one of Gaudi’s show pieces.  Ample free time for you to visit and to enjoy a quick refreshment.  We then continue to Sagrada Familia, the project that took up most of Gaudi’s time until his death. We visit the Sagrada Familia and have our lunch break in the area of the temple.  Our afternoon continues with a visit to Park Guell, one of Gaudi’s more adventurous projects.  Overnight Barcelona.

DAY 5  Today we travel by high speed train to Madrid with lunch service on board.  Overnight Madrid.

DAY 6  Morning orientation tour of the Madrid of Habsburgs & Bourbon royalty. Taking in the sights such as the Plaza Mayor, Puerta de Sol and Plaza del Angel, ending our morning with a visit to the Royal Palaces.  Afternoon visit to the Art Triangle, with free time to visit the museum of your choice, The Prado, The Reina Sofia or the Thyssen Museum. Finally a walk through The Retiro Park, Madrid, for a Spanish paseo.  Overnight Madrid.

DAY 7  Today's excursion takes us back to the times of Phillip II.  We will visit the monumentous Escorial Monastery, largest monument in Spain and resting place of Spain*s Monarchy from the 16th century. Free time for lunch.  Our afternoon visit is to The Valley of the Fallen, just a short drive from the Escorial.  This resting place for thousands of Civil War soldiers, including General Franco himself is an imposing monument, excavated into the rock by prisoners of war, and will leave no one indifferent.  Overnight Madrid.

DAY 8  Today we will venture to Toledo, the Capital of Visigothic Spain and homeland to many Jewish and Moorish ancestors. A panoramic tour of Toledo is how we are introduced to this important city followed by a stop at one of its main sword manufacturers.  Steel works have been important to Toledo for many centuries and still exist today but in a more artesian way.  Still alive too, is it's Damask trade where we see examples of this being made.  We continue our visit with an orientation walk through the Medieval streets of Toledo, visiting the Cathedral. Free time for lunch and some free time in the afternoon before we join our overnight train to Lisbon.

DAY 9  Our motorcoach will be waiting for us at the train station when we arrive.  Our visit today is to the picture book town of Sintra.  Firstly, a visit to the Pena Palace and then free time in the town for lunch.  Continue on in the afternoon down the mountainside to the coast stopping of at the Cabo da Roca lighthouse, Boca da Infierno and the seaside resort of Cascais.  Check into our Lisbon hotel.  Overnight Lisbon.

DAY 10  Today we dedicate our day entirely to Lisbon.  Starting in the Belen area, visiting the Monasterio de los Jeronimos, Discoveries Monument, Belen Tower and then return to the centre of the city.  Free time for lunch.  Afternoon visits to the Archaeological museum, the area of the Alfama and the St Jorge Castle.  Enjoy a leisurely fish dinner in Lisbon and possibly listen to their famous Alfada music.  Overnight Lisbon.  

DAY 11  Depart from Lisbon Airport.

A Pilgrimage to Spain - Following the Path of Pilgrims On The Camino de Santiago

 

The Camino de Santiago, or the way of St James begins in St Jean de Port, France and continues some 500 miles to Santiago, the believed burial site of St James.  This same path has been taken for hundreds of years by the faithful making their holy pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.  The path was also used by Roman, Moor and Saracen invaders, the Knights Templar and the armies of Charlemagne and Napoleon.  This journey is steeped in spiritual significance,  as well as much historical and cultural significance.

DAY 1  Depart the United States via overnight flight to Madrid, Spain.

DAY 2  Upon arrival in Madrid we will meet our driver and guide and drive to Sarria. We will visit the Samos Monastery, an active Benedictine Monastery originally founded in the 6th century.  The architect for the monastery was one of its own monks, Juan Vazquez. Dinner and overnight near Sarria.

DAY 3  Today we begin with Morning Prayer before we start our approximately 72 mile walk to Santiago, taking in the sites of the small country churches, oak and chestnut groves and farm life along the way.

Upon arrival in Portomarin, we will visit the Church of San Juan, which was moved stone by stone from its' original location down in the river valley.  This afternoon we visit the city of Lugo where we will walk along the 1800 year old Roman Wall encircling the historical quarter.  Overnight Portomarin.

DAY 4  Today*s hilly walk continues through field and forest filled with countless examples of Galician vernacular architecture * wayside crosses, granaries, and medieval bridges. Upon arrival in Palas de Rei we will take a short bus trip to the Villa de Donas Church to see its beautiful frescoes.  Overnight Palas de Rei.    

Walking distance 14.6 miles.

DAY 5  Today's walk take us through the small bustling town of Melide where we will visit the small Ethnographic Museum.  Our afternoon excursion takes us to the Portodemouros Reservoir where we can rent kayaks on our own or visit the Museo de Mel (Honey Museum).

DAY 6  A slightly more populated walk today as we continue our walk to Arca and get closer to Santiago de Compostela.  Once in Arca we will visit the Monastery of Sobrado, founded in the 10th century and which continues to be active today.  Overnight Arca.

DAY 7  An early start as our aim is to be in Santiago de Compostela by 12 noon. We will stop and reflect on the Monte del Gozo (Mount Joy) from which the spires of the Cathedral can be seen. As we will have walked more than the necessary 62 miles, the motorcoach will take us to the starting point of today's walk thus ensuring that we arrive in Santiago on time to attend the Pilgrim's Mass.  The Botafumeiro, a four-foot incense burner that is swung across the cathedral, will be used in 2010.  In the medieval days, the incense was burned to mask the smell of the pilgrims in the church.   We will also go to the Pilgrim's Office where we will turn in our Pilgrim*s Passport in exchange for our Compostela Certificates and enjoy an orientation tour of Santiago. There will be some free time to enjoy the city in the afternoon.  We will have our farewell dinner

Wesleyan Tour to England and Ireland 

DAY 1  Depart the United States via overnight flight to London.

DAY 2  Upon arrival in London we will meet our driver and guide and drive to our hotel in London.  We will relax for the remainder of the day until our "Welcome" dinner at the hotel.  Overnight London.

DAY 3  Our City guide takes us on a tour of London highlighting the West End with it's parks and gardens, Parliament, Big Ben, Trafalgar Square, a visit to Westminster Abbey, and finishing with the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace (if held).  In the heart of the city of London we visit Wesley’s Chapel and Museum.  This was the home of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism and we can also see his grave.  See the plaque nearby entitled 'Aldersgate' marking the site of the conversion of John and Charles Wesley, situated between St Paul’s and the British Museum.  Overnight London.

DAY 4  A guided visit to the town of Windsor, touring Windsor Castle, the Queen’s favorite residence.  Time to walk/shop in the town before we return to central London.  Afternoon free in London to shop or sightsee.  Overnight London.

DAY 5  Depart after breakfast via Epping Forest to the University City of Cambridge where we stop for a stroll in the town, see the River Cam and enjoy the university life which permeates the town.  We continue via Stamford and Grantham to Lincoln.  Lincoln is dominated by it's Cathedral, dating from the 11th century, which stands out from the flat Lincolnshire countryside.  After our stop here we reach Epworth, birthplace of John Wesley.  Overnight Lincoln area.

DAY 6  This morning we visit the Wesley Chapel Museum, and the home and birthplace of John Wesley at Epworth.  John Wesley’s great work in the 18th Century laid the foundations for the Methodist Church as it stands today.  We will try to arrange lunch in the rectory.  Overnight Lincoln area.

DAY 7  This morning we will drive to York to visit this old Roman City, enjoying a look inside the magnificent Minster and stroll in the Shambles unique shopping lanes.  Return to Lincoln for dinner and overnight.

DAY 8  First to Sheffield, largest city in Yorkshire, where we visit the town centre, Castle Square with it's underground shopping complex and Castle market, the old town.  The remains of the Georgian quarter north of the Anglican Cathedral, include the quiet oasis of Paradise Square.  John Wesley preached to his largest weekday congregation here in July 1779.  Then to the Birmingham area, to the small suburb known as Great Barr. Visit the cottage at Great Barr of the Methodist Bishop, Frances Asbury.  Asbury was sent to the New World by John Wesley in 1770, and traveled a quarter of a million miles on horseback in his efforts to win converts for the Methodist faith.  This afternoon drive into North Wales and stop here for dinner and overnight.  Overnight North Wales. 

DAY 9  We drive to Holyhead and take the morning ferry to Dun Laoghaire.  Evening free.  Overnight Dublin.

DAY 10  We are joined by a local city guide for a morning tour, seeing St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Book of Kells.  Afternoon and evening free - suggest a dinner show at the Abbey Tavern in the seaside town of Howth for a typical Irish menu and evening of Irish songs.  Overnight Dublin.

DAY 11  We drive into the countryside north of Dublin to the Drogheda area.  We stop to visit Newgrange, one of the most important passage graves in Europe, and steeped in history.   After our visit to the tomb there, and a walk on this historic site, we drive south to Waterford, home to the famous Irish Crystal, where we can make a stop at their factory.  Overnight near Rosslare. 

DAY 12  Ferry ride across the  sea to Fishguard on the south  west coast of Wales.  Overnight Bristol area. 

DAY 13  We enjoy a drive through the thriving city of Bristol, a seaport and manufacturing centre.  We shall see the OLDEST METHODIST CHAPEL in England, and “New Room,” built by John Wesley in 1739 and restored in 1930.  Wesley himself used the living quarters upstairs.  His statue stands in the courtyard.  Drive to the fine Georgian city of Bath, where we stop to see the famous Pulteney Bridge and the Roman Baths.  Time for shopping on our own.  Overnight Brisol area.

DAY 14  Drive through the pretty Cotswold countryside, to the small hamlet of South Leigh, near Witney.  Stop here to see the church notable for its 14-15C wall paintings.  John Wesley preached his first sermon here in 1725.  Next into Oxford, where we will visit Lincoln College, one of the best preserved of the last medieval colleges.  We will see the rooms in which John Wesley, a fellow of the college, is said to have lived and members of the Holy Club or Methodist's first met.  We also see the church of St Mary the Virgin where John Wesley worshipped and preached.  Continue on to London.  Overnight London.

DAY 15  Depart from London airport.

A Pilgrimage to England - Featuring Canterbury and the Pilgrim's Way 

DAY 1  Depart USA on overnight flight to London.

DAY 2  Upon arrival in London, we will meet our driver and guide and drive to  Canterbury, the center of English Christianity. We will stop along the way to Canterbury to have a light lunch at Aylesford Priory, an order of Carmelites dating back to the 13th century.  We will overnight and have a "Welcome to England" dinner at Canterbury.

DAY 3  Today we take a guided tour of Christchurch Cathedral, the Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of Canterbury, a living textbook of medieval architecture and the first of England*s great Norman cathedrals. Thomas * Becket was martyred here when he was Archbishop of Canterbury.   Next, a guided walking tour of Canterbury will include St Martin*s Church which was used for Christian services before the coming of St Augustine, and a stroll along  the High Street seeing the Witches* ducking stool.  This afternoon we visit Dover to see the famous White Cliffs and Dover Castle. We then see the Hellfire exhibit in the castle before we return to Canterbury in time for Evensong tonight.

DAY 4  We enjoy a Pilgrim's walk this morning, leaving Canterbury to the small village of Charing, whose Archbishop*s Palace was once visited by Henry VII and given to  Henry VIII by Archbishop Cranmer.   We walk a stretch of the Pilgrim*s Way across countryside that has changed little.  We then continue through the southern counties of England to Stonehenge on Salisbury Plain.  This ancient monument dates from 1400-1800 B.C., and nearby is Avebury, also an historic stone circle.

DAY 5  Today we tour Salisbury and visit the cathedral which has the highest spire of any in Great Britain and contains an original copy of the Magna Carta. Around the medieval cathedral are the quaint cobbled streets which make this market town so picturesque.  We will visit Winchester, capital of England for more than four centuries.  We explore Winchester Cathedral, the longest medieval church in England which was begun in 1079 and consecrated in 1093. We see the Great Hall, the remains of the city's castle, the place where the English Parliament first met in 1246 and where Sir Walter Raleigh was tried for conspiracy and sentenced to death.  Also housed here is the reputed mystical Round Table of the Knights of King Arthur. We return to the Salisbury area to attend Evensong at the Cathedral.

DAY 6  We leave Salisbury this morning and travel along a route that will allow us to see a White Horse carved in the chalk hills to Glastonbury, where, according to legend, Joseph of Arimathea brought the Chalice of the Last Supper.  A primitive church was built and legend has it that the Glastonbury Thornbush sprang from St Joseph*s staff and offshoots from the original bush can be seen on the abbey grounds.  We will continue to Wells, England*s smallest cathedral city.  Here we will see St Andrew*s Well within the grounds of the Bishop*s Palace and the famous Cathedral Church of St Andrew.   Overnight in the Bath area. 

DAY 7  Visit Bath, seeing its elegant Georgian architecture and historic streets.   The town came into being because of the purported medicinal properties of the natural springs.  We will visit the Roman Baths and Pump Room, and see Bath Abbey. We will finish our tour with a stroll among the antique shops of Pulteney bridge.  Afternoon drive to Oxford.

DAY 8  Today we explore the University City of Oxford.  We see the colleges of Christ Church, Merton, Queen*s College, Magdalen College, New College as well as the Sheldonian Theatre.  We will visit the Martyr*s Memorial with statues of Cranmer, Ridley and Latimer who were burned at the stake in 1556 in nearby Broad Street.  You will have some free time this afternoon before your Oxford pub crawl and dinner this evening.

Overnight Oxford.

DAY 9  Travel to London this morning via Bladon, the burial place of Sir Winston Churchill, seeing Blenheim Palace from the outside (his birthplace), and via the Thames Valley journey into central London.  After lunch we will tour London*s West End (the Queen*s London) with a half day panoramic sightseeing tour including Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, and Buckingham Palace. We visit Westminster Abbey where England's monarchs have been crowned since 1066 and then attend Evensong at the Abbey.  Overnight London.

DAY 10  This morning we travel to the town of Windsor, to visit Windsor Castle, the largest inhabited Castle in the world.  Return to London at lunch time.  Our afternoon will be free in London to do as we please.  Overnight in London.

DAY 11  We will attend morning services at St Paul's Cathedral and have a free afternoon to visit some of your favorite places, shop for last minute souvenirs or explore something new.  Overnight London.

A Pilgrimage to England and Scotland - Exploring our Celtic Spirituality 

DAY 1  Depart the United for States for overnight flight to Scotland.

DAY 2  Upon arrival in Scotland, we will meet our driver and guide and drive south to Lindisfarne, Holy Island, off of the Northumbria coast.  En route we will stop to visit Rosslyn Chapel, known for the quality and variety of its stone carvings.  The chapel is believed by many to be the burial place of the Holy Grail and was featured in the Da Vinci Code.   Overnight Lindisfarne or Berwick on Tweed.

DAY 3  We will have a walking tour of the island including the “Old Road.”  Aidan and his monks came from the Irish monastery of Iona and, with the support of King Oswald (based at nearby Bamburgh), worked as missionaries among the pagan English of Northumbria.  In time, Lindisfarne became known for its skill in Christian art of which the Lindisfarne Gospels are the most beautiful surviving example. You are free to have lunch on your own and further explore.  We will have dinner and overnight on Lindisfarne/Berwick on Tweed.

DAY 4  Morning services on Holy Island and then we will depart traveling north and across Scotland.  Drive to the abbeys known as the border abbeys which lie along the border between Scotland and England.  We will visit Jedburgh and Dryburgh Abbeys. We will continue our drive north through the Trossachs which contain some of Scotland’s most beautiful hills, forests and lochs. We will see Loch Lomond, the largest of all Scotland’s lochs, before arriving at Oban, a lively waterfront town on the shores of the Atlantic.  You will be free to find one of the many interesting pubs or seafood restaurants that area around the the town for your dinner this evening.  Overnight Oban. 

DAY 5  We will board our ferry to the Island of Mull.   Upon reaching Mull,  we travel across the island to the second ferry that will take us to the Holy Island of Iona.  We will have a guide from the island join us and introduce us to the history and importance of Iona. We will explore the Abbey, visit St Oran’s Chapel, Cemetery (the burial ground of forty-eight Scottish Kings including Duncan who was killed by MacBeth), Nunnery Church and Church of St Ronan. We will have Evening Prayer in St Michael’s Chapel and attend the 9:00 pm services at Iona Abbey together. We will have dinner and overnight on Iona. 

DAY 6  Today we will take a boat tour around the Treshnish Islands to the Isle of Staffa.  This balsaltic wonder harbors Fingal’s Cave, formed within tertiary basalt lava flows which cooled to form hexagonal columns.  The island itself is a bird sanctuary harboring many types of sea birds.  We will return to the Island of Iona to continue our exploration there.  Dinner and overnight Isle of Iona. 

DAY 7  A three-hour walking tour of Machair and Columba's Bay, said to be where St Columba landed from Ireland in 563 AD. We will visit a marble quarry which is no longer in use although pieces of stones with green marble may still be found. The rest of the day will include a combination of free time with a possible visit to the Iona Heritage Center and the St Columba welcome Center as we continue our introduction to Celtic Christianity and spirituality.  Overnight Isle of Iona. 

DAY 8  After breakfast take the foot passenger ferry back to the Isle of Mull and then the bus ride to Craignure.  Return ferry to Oban.  Short stop in Oban to stroll in the harbor and sample the local fish and then either bus or train from Oban to Edinburgh.  We arrive in time for a short evening stroll before dinner.  Overnight Edinburgh. 

DAY 9  Morning panoramic sightseeing tour of Edinburgh beginning with the Castle with its spectacular views from the battlements.  Continue to the Royal Mile, seeing the Cathedral of St Giles and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, official residence of the Queen when she is in Scotland.  The original palace was rebuilt by Charles II in the style of the French King, Louis XIV, and is open to visitors when the Queen is not in residence. Walk the Royal Mile seeing its quaint streets and alleyways where we may  have lunch. Afternoon free for exploring on your own before our farewell dinner this evening.  Overnight Edinburgh.

DAY 10  Depart from Edinburgh airport.

A Pilgrimage to France

 

DAY 1  Depart the United States via overnight flight to Paris.

DAY 2  Upon our morning arrival in Paris, we will meet our driver and guide and travel through the Loire Valley to visit the Chateau De Chambord, once a hunting lodge and the largest chateau in the Loire Valley.  We continue on to Tours, the region*s largest and most commercial city. 

Dinner and overnight Tours.   

DAY 3  Today we continue to travel through the Loire Valley to Brittany.  We will visit the Chateau d Azay-le-Rideau.  Then we journey to Abbaye de Fontevraud, where we will visit the Plantagenets Tombs and the Kitchens.  We then continue to Carnac Ruins.   

Dinner and overnight Vannes.  

DAY 4  After breakfast we will travel to Fougeres, a fortress town that rests on a hill overlooking the Nancon River.  We continue on to Mont St Michel, one of the most enchanting sights in France.  We will walk the pilgrim's route, this route has been followed since the 12th century.  We will climb to the Abbey where we will have time to explore on our own. 

Dinner and overnight Mont St Michel.   

DAY 5  Today we will travel to Bayeux, the first town to be liberated by the Allies in 1944.  We will see  Bayeux's famous tapestry which is displayed at the Centre Guillaume-le-Conquerant.  We will see the Normandy Beaches then continue on to Giverny to visit the Foundation Claude Monet, the house of painter Claude Monet.  We will see the gardens Monet painted in some of his most famous works. We continue on to Paris for dinner and overnight.   

DAY 6  Morning tour of Ile de la Cit* and the Left Bank.  We will visit Sainte-Chapelle, built in 1248 to house what was believed to be Christ's Crown of Thorns and fragments of the True Cross.  We will see the world-famous masterpiece of the Middle ages, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris.  Our last site today will be the Cluny Museum, a unique combination of Gallo-Roman ruins in a medieval mansion and one of the world's finest collections of medieval art and crafts.   After lunch the afternoon will be free to explore on our own.  Overnight Paris.   

DAY 7  Morning tour of Paris including a visit to the Catacombs.  The afternoon we will be free to enjoy Paris on our own.

DAY 8  Today we will travel to Chartres Cathedral to see the 13th century Labyrinth.  As a penance, pilgrims followed the torturous route on their knees, echoing the Way of the Cross.  We will also visit the Stained Glass of Chartres, a glorious collection of over one hundred and fifty stained glass windows that illustrate Biblical stories and daily life in the 13th century.  We return to Paris for overnight.

DAY 9  Full day to enjoy our last day in Paris.  Overnight Paris.    

DAY 10  After breakfast we will travel to Vezelay to visit the Basilique Ste-Madeleine, a pilgrimage destination for centuries. 

We will follow in the footsteps of the medieval pilgrims as we ascend the narrow street up to the former abbey church.  We continue on to Beaune to visit the H*tel-Dieu, a hospice founded in 1443 to help the inhabitants of Beaune which had suffered the effects of poverty and famine after the Hundred Years War.  Our last stop for the day will be Cluny, home to the Ancienne Abbaye de Cluny, the largest church before St Peter*s was built in Rome.  We will celebrate Eucharist in the ruins of the Abbey.  Overnight Cluny.    

DAY 11  Morning drive to Taize, a small village world famous for its international religious community.  Taize is visited by thousands of teens and young adults every year where they participate in the community by following a typical day of prayer, Bible reading, singing, small group meetings, practical work and prayer vigil.  We continue on through the Rhone Valley to Vienne where we will have lunch and visit the Temple d'Auguste et Livie and the Theatre Romain.   Our journey continues to Orange for dinner and overnight.    

DAY 12  This morning we depart for Avignon, the fascinating town in southern France.  Ramparts enclose Avignon which is dominated by Palais des Papes.  In 1309, Pope Clement V moved the papal palace and which reflects the violent nature of 14th century religious life.  We will visit the Palais des Papes and Pont St-Benezet, according to legend, a shepherd boy name Benezet built it in the 12th century acting on orders from heaven.  Now onto Les-Baux-De-Provence, a tiny village with medieval ruins from the days when the town had 6,000 residents.  Our final destination today is  Nice for a late afternoon walking tour.  Dinner and overnight Nice.

DAY 13  After breakfast we travel to Monaco where we will visit the Palais Du Prince where we will see the lavish state rooms and see the changing of the guards at 11:55 am.  We continue on to Gourdon for lunch and then on to Grasse, which, surrounded by fields of flowers, has  been the center of the world's perfume industry since the 16th century.  We will visit the Museum Internationale de la Parfumerie.  Overnight Nice.

DAY 14  Today we will explore on our own.  This evening we will enjoy a *Farewell to France* dinner on the shores of the Riviera.

A Pilgrimage to Fatima and Lisbon

Day 1  Depart the United States via overnight flight to Lisbon. 

DAY 2  Upon arrival in Lisbon, we will meet our driver and guide and drive to our hotel in Fatima.  Afternoon visit to the sanctuary in Fatima.  Evening Torchlight procession.  Overnight Fatima.

DAY 3  Our day begins with a visit to the Sanctuary Museum, where we can see the bullet that was used in the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul. Free time for lunch and in the afternoon we will walk the Way of the Cross, ending with a visit to Valhinos to see the houses where the Children who witnessed the Miracle lived.  Overnight Fatima.

DAY 4  Morning showing of the films regarding the the Miracle of Fatima. Free afternoon.  Overnight Fatima.

DAY 5  Morning check out and then we continue on to our next destination, Cascais.  Check in and afternoon orientation walk of Cascais.  Overnight Cascais.

DAY 6  Today we dedicate our day entirely to Lisbon.  We start in the Belen area, visiting the Monasterio de los Jeronimos, Discoveries Monument, Belen Tower and then returning to the centre of the city.  Free time for lunch.  Afternoon visits to the Archaeological museum, the area of the Alfama and the St Jorge Castle.  Overnight Cascais.

DAY 7  Excursion to Sintra and Cabo da Roca.  Overnight Cascais.

DAY 8  Free day.  Overnight Cascais.

Madrid - Medieval Marvel - Palaces, Monasteries and Spain through the Ages

DAY 1  Depart the United States via overnight flight to Madrid.

DAY 2  Upon arrival, we will meet our driver and guide and drive to our hotel in central Madrid.  Overnight Madrid.

DAY 3  We begin our morning with an orientation tour of the Madrid of Habsburgs & Bourbon royalty. Taking in the sights such as the Plaza Mayor, Puerta de Sol and Plaza del Angel, we end our morning with a visit to the Royal Palaces.  Afternoon visit to the Art Triangle, with free time to visit the museum of your choice, The Prado, The Reina Sofia or the Thyssen Museum. Finally, we walk through The Retiro Park, Madrid, a breath of fresh air.  Overnight Madrid.  

DAY 4  We venture to Aranjuez, home to one of Madrid's most famous palaces.  We begin with a visit to the Palace followed by free time in the acres of gardens and free time for lunch.  On the way back to Madrid we make a short stop in Chinchon.  Overnight Madrid.                  

DAY 5  Today's excursion takes us back to the times of Phillip II.  Upon arriving in Madrid we will visit the monumental Escorial Monastery, the largest monument in Spain and resting place of Spain's Monarchy from the 16th century. Free time for lunch in this delightful city.  Our afternoon visit is to the Valley of the Fallen, just a short drive from the Escorial.  The resting place for thousands of Civil War soldiers as well as Franco himself, this imposing monument, excavated into the rock by prisoners of war, will leave no one indifferent.  Overnight Madrid.

DAY 6  Today's visit has one name, SANTA TERESA.  Named the first woman Doctor of the Catholic Church, Santa Teresa of Avila was without doubt born before her time.  Incorporated into our day is a visit to the Convent where Santa Teresa started her Religious life and where many of her Visions took place. Its is also from here where she went to begin her own Religious order, the Barefoot Carmelites. We continue our visit in the city of Avila itself.  Surrounded totally by Medieval walls, it's cobble stoned streets and ancient noble houses are a delight.  Free time for lunch before heading back to Madrid.  Overnight Madrid.

DAY 7  Our first stop is to another one of Spain finest Palaces, La Granja. Known as Petit Versalles, La Granja, is not only one of Spain's most important Palaces, but the area itself housed at one time a major glass making industry where glass making still continues today and, depending on dates, we may be able to visit the glass works.  We continue on to Segovia, where we have a free afternoon to enjoy the delights of this city, such as the Roman Aquaduct, fairytale architecture of its Alcazar and beauty of its cathedral.   Overnight Madrid.

DAY 8  Today's journey takes us to Toledo, capital of Visigothic Spain and homeland to many Jewish and Moorish ancestors. A panoramic tour of Toledo is how we are introduced to this important city followed by a stop at one of it's main sword manufacturers.  Steel works have been important to Toledo for many centuries and still exist today, but in a more artesian way.  Still alive too, is it's Damask trade. We can see examples of this being made.  We then continue our visit with an orientation walk through the Medieval streets of Toledo and visit the Cathedral. Free time for lunch and to continue exploring Toledo.  Overnight Madrid.

A Pilgrimage to Morroco's Imperial Cities and Andalucia, Spain 

DAY 1  Depart the United States via overnight flight to Malaga.

DAY 2  Upon arrival in Malaga we will meet our driver and guide and drive  to our hotel in Malaga.  We will have an afternoon orientation visit of Malaga, seeing the Cathedral and the Pablo Picasso Museum.  Overnight Malaga.  

DAY 3  An early morning call and check out.  Our motorcoach takes us to the Port of Algeciras to catch the ferry to Tangiers (or Ceuta). The ferry crossing is approximately forty-five minutes.  We dock and leave via motorcoach to start our long journey, making comfort stops en route to our first destination, Fez.  Overnight Fez. 

DAY 4  A full day visit to the Imperial City of Fez today with our local guide. Starting with a panoramic and contemplating the facade of the royal palace, the doorway of Bab Buylud, the exterior of the Mausoleum of Mulay Idriss II, the artesan's quarter, the Mosque of the university Medersa Karauyin and the Jewish quarter Mellah. We make various stops to see the artesans at work, including the tanneries, the potteries, the artesan metalworkers, artesan carpet makers, traditional dress shop, etc.  Overnight Fez.

DAY 5  Check out and continue our journey in the direction of Marrakesh. On arrival we enjoy a panoramic tour of Mekness.  Today is the long journey by motorcoach as we head on south through the Mid Atlas mountain range. We will be making numerous comfort stops as well as a lunch stop.  Check into our hotel in Marrakesh before dinner.  Evening walk to the busy Djemma Square.  Overnight Marrakesh.

DAY 6  This morning our local guide meets us after breakfast and we enjoy a morning visiting the sights such as the gardens of the Koutoubia Mosque, the tombs of the Sardiana Dynasty, the Bahia Palace hotel, the zoco, (making a stop at the local herbalists) and ending our morning in the Djeema square. Free afternoon.  Overnight Marrakesh.

DAY 7  Our first stop of the day, in time for lunch, is Casablanca where we will enjoy a panoramic tour of the country's economic capital.  We will make a stop at the Mosque of Hassan II and enjoy a free time period in Casablanca. Early afternoon we continue on to Rabat.  Overnight Rabat.

DAY 8  By no means has our visit to Rabat ended!  Our local guide is waiting to take us on a guided tour of Rabat, the capital of Morocco, visiting the esplanade of the Royal Palace, the Mausoleum of Mohammad V and the Andalucian Quarter.  Late morning we continue on to Tangiers, making a stop for lunch. Upon arrival in Tangiers we check into our hotel and have free time for last minute shopping.  Overnight Tangiers.

DAY 9  Check out and travel to the ferry port for our crossing back to Algeciras, Spain.  Once in Spain our motorcoach will drive us to Seville.  Overnight Seville.

DAY 10  We make a walking tour of colorful Seville, home of the flamenco dancing, Sevillanas, and host to Spain’s most vibrant feria in spring.  Visit the Cathedral, the largest in Europe, the Real Alcazar and the Jewish quarter of Santa Cruz.  Afternoon to shop in this most elegant and exciting city.  Overnight Seville.

DAY 11  We take a short drive to Cordoba and visit this ancient walled city for the rest of the day.  We will see the magnificent Mezquite (Great Mosque), with it's Cathedral within, and the Alcazar of the Catholic Kings.    Walk the pedestrian streets for more Andalucian highlights.  Overnight Cordoba. 

DAY 12  Today we will drive through the olive groves and countryside of Southern Spain to the mountainous area of the Province of Granada.  Arrival in Granada to visit the Alhambra Palace, the Old Muslin Quarter and the Cathedral.   Return to Malaga for overnight.

A Pilgrimage to Rome, Florence and Assisi - In the Footsteps of St Francis

DAY 1  Depart the United States via overnight flight to Rome. 

DAY 2  Upon arrival in Rome we will meet our driver and guide and drive north to Assisi, birthplace of St Francis and a city whose walls have hardly changed since the Middle Ages.  Overnight Assisi. 

DAY 3  A full-day walking tour of Assisi, using local buses where appropriate.   We will visit the Basilica de San Francesco, seeing Giotto’s Frescos, and the crypt where the remains of St Francis rest.  We see the Cappella del Croscifissco, the cross that spoke to St Francis and led him to his life of piety.  We then journey on to the church of San Damino and then to Santa Maria degli Angeli, the baroque church built over the Porziuncola (the chapel restored by St Francis).  It is here where St Francis died.  Overnight Assisi.

DAY 4  Today we visit Eremo Delle Carceri, a monastery in the dense woodlands on the side of Monte Subasio.  Here, on the slope of the mountain in caves, St Francis and his followers established their first home and to which he returned often during his lifetime to pray and meditate.   Then we travel on to La Verna visiting the site where St Francis received the stigmata, and finally to Isola Maggiore where St Francis went on retreat for forty days.   Overnight Assisi. 

DAY 5  This morning we travel to Florence.  On arrival we enjoy a guided walking tour of the city.  We will see the famous piazzas, and visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with its magnificent dome, Bell Tower and Baptistery.  The Baptistery has golden doors designed by Ghiberti representing scenes from the Life and Passion of Christ.  We visit the Accademia museum and see Michelangelo's famous statue of David.  The remainder of the afternoon is left to explore Florence on our own.  Overnight Florence.

DAY 6  Morning free in Florence for us to visit the Uffizi Gallery, shop in the street markets or elegant shopping avenues and enjoy a Florentine lunch.  This afternoon we make an excursion into the Tuscany countryside visiting a local vineyard and olive oil producer.  Overnight Florence. 

DAY 7  We begin our journey toward Rome as St Francis did in 1209.  We travel along the "Highway of the Sun" and visit Greccio to see the Greccio Monastery, where St Francis celebrated Christmas in 1223 by placing a manger and live animals before the altar which started the custom of making creches or manger scenes at Christmas.  We continue on to Rome for overnight stopping before arrival at the eternal city at Ostia Antica to visit this ancient area.  Overnight Rome.     

DAY 8  This morning we will tour the Vatican City, an area of one hundred nine acres, ruled by the Pope, with  its own postage stamps, coinage, anthem and Flag.  We visit St Peter's Basilica, built on the site where St Peter was buried after he had been martyred in Nero's Circus.  The first chapel on the right as you enter St Peter's contains the Pieta', the moving and powerful masterpiece carved by Michelangelo.  We will then visit the Vatican Museums and at the end of the tour, see the Sistine Chapel created by Michelangelo on it's ceiling.  Overnight Rome.

DAY 9  This morning we tour Ancient Rome, seeing the Colosseum, the Forum and visiting the church of St John the Lateran.   Our afternoon is free for personal sightseeing and shopping.  Farewell dinner and overnight in Rome.

OBERAMMERGAU 2010 - Tour of Austria, Germany, Switzerland

DAY 1  Depart the United States for overnight flight to Zurich, Switzerland.

DAY 2  Upon arrival in Zurich we will meet our driver and guide and drive to our hotel in Lake Lucerne.  Check into hotel in Lucerne and take an afternoon walk to the lake, see the Old Bridge and walk the elegant shopping streets.  Overnight Lake Lucerne. 

DAY 3  A full day tour to Interlaken, situated between Lakes Thun and Brienz.   From Interlaken we drive to Lauterbrunnen where we take the train to the Jungfraujoch.  The rack and pinion railway, the highest railway in Europe, part of which runs through a tunnel through the Eiger takes us to the Jungraujoch.  At the top we will see the Jungfrau Glacier and can visit the Observatory.   Suggest lunch today at the Steuri Pinte Restaurant in Grindelwald,  a traditional restaurant with summer terrace specializing in fondu, raclette and rosti.   In the afternoon we stop at the woodcarving village of Brienz.   Return to Lucerne.  Suggest a fun evening for traditional Swiss food and music at the Stadtkeller!  Overnight Lake Lucerne.

DAY 4  Travel through Switzerland into Austria via the Arlberg Tunnel, taking us under the Arlberg Pass en route to Innsbruck, where we take a short walk and then to Salzburg.  Overnight Salzburg.

DAY 5  Traditional walking tour of the Old Town of Salzburg, seeing Mozart’s birthplace, followed by a Sound of Music excursion, seeing Leopoldskron Palace, Hellbrunn Palace (Gazebo), Lake Fuschl, St Gilgen, Mondsee (Wedding Church).   We suggest lunch in the delightful town of St Gilgen at Restaurant Fisherwirt.  Overnight Salzburg.

DAY 6  A day excursion to Vienna, meeting our city guide to visit St Stephen’s Cathedral, stroll in the old town with coffee and cake at one of the fabulous Viennese coffee shops, and see the magnificent Schoenbrunn Palace.  Return to Salzburg.  This evening may be a night of Mozart’s music!  Overnight Salzburg.

DAY 7  From Salzburg we journey to the Oberammergau area where we stop for two nights in local lodges to participate in the Passion Play performed every ten years by the local villagers as a celebration of their town’s release from the plague.  Overnight Oberammergau. 

DAY 8  Morning for personal sightseeing in Oberammergau until our lunch.  Afternoon and evening at the play.  Overnight Oberammergau.

DAY 9  Visit of Bavaria with a tour of the amazing Neuschwanstein Castle.  This amazing hilltop structure was home to the mad King Ludwig and was Disney’s inspiration for Cinderella’s castle.  We shall also pass by the Castle of Linderhof before we drive into Munich, Bavaria’s capital. 

Enjoy a summer evening in one of the city’s Beer Gardens and stroll in the Marienplatz to see the Town Hall and its chiming clock.  Overnight Munich.

DAY 10  Depart from Munich airport.
