Birka was founded in the 750´s and is usually referred to as Sweden’s first real town.
The boat trip to Björkö/Birka includes a guide onboard and on land, as well as admission to the museum. You can look forward to a beautiful tour through Lake Mälaren archipelago on our way to Birka.
Reconstructing the houses from the Viking period: During the summer we are reconstructing the houses and workshops of old Birka. Five houses will be completed during 2008 by using the same techniques and tools as the Vikings once used. We will tell you about our work and how the houses are built. We will also give you an understanding about how the people once lived on Birka.
Things to do: Birka is a beautiful island with plenty of opportunities for walks in the countryside and a landscape rich in cultural history. Experience the magical atmosphere at Hemlanden, the Nordic region’s biggest Viking-period cemetery. Visit the Ansgar chapel, the reconstructed buildings, the museum and join us on a guided tour. For warm and sunny days, Birka also has a nice beach for swimming in Lake Mälaren.
The Museum: The museum is a great place to learn more about the Viking period. There are models of Birka, ancient findings and replicas as well as a film showed regularly and plenty of literature if you´d like to read more at home.
Food: M/S Victoria is equipped with both a restaurant and a café open during the outbound and homeward journey. M/s Eskil also has a cafeteria on board with lighter snacks. On the island you’ll find the restaurant Särimner with a menu featuring elements of Viking cuisine.
