Travel along the picturesque Apollo Coast to Cape Sounion (approximately 60 kilometers from Athens) where you will visit the Temple of Poseidon. Poseidon occupied a position in Athenian foundation mythology second only to Athena herself. The temple was constructed in 440 BC, over the ruins of a temple dating from the Archaic Period. It is perched above the sea at a height of almost 60 meters. The architect who built the Temple of Hephaistos in the Agora of Athens may have also designed this temple. The temple was built in the austere Doric style and is in memory of King Aegeas who, as legend has, leapt to his death off the cliff, thus giving his name to the Aegean Sea.
Lord Byron, the poet, chose this temple to carve his name on one of the columns in the 19th century which can still be observed today.
