Your driver guide for the day will meet you at Dover Docks at 9:00AM where your Full Day Guided Tour of The Garden of England will begin. Your first stop will be Dover Castle built in the 11th Century by the Normans and then later extended by Henry IIIV. Here you will also find ‘Hell Fire Corner’ a catacombs of caves and tunnels built into the famous White Cliffs of Dover. These were used during World War II in the defense of England. In the caves you will experience food and hospital smells together with exhibits that include the War Rooms. Your next stop will be Canterbury and its Cathedral where Thomas the Becket was slain. The Cathedral is the centre piece of Canterbury surrounded by a city wall built by the Romans. Here you will have time for lunch in maybe one of the quaint old English pubs and walk the narrow streets. Your last stop will be Leeds Castle. The castle passed into royal hands in 1278 and became part of the Queen of England’s dower - the settlement widowed queens received upon the death of their husbands. Over the course of 150 years it was held by six mediaeval queens: Eleanor of Castile; Margaret of France; Isabella of France, Joan of Navarre; Anne of Bohemia and Catherine de Valois. In Tudor times Henry VIII visited frequently, notably with his Queen, Catherine of Aragon, and their entire court on the way to the tournament of the Field of the Cloth of Gold, which took place in France in 1520. Henry’s son, King Edward VI, granted the castle to one of Henry’s courtiers for his services. Our tour will terminaye at your centrally located London Hotel at 04.00PM |
