Jewish people first arrived in Dubrovnik in the 15th Century and made an important contribution to the Republic's Golden Age.Today the Dubrovnik Jewish Community has less then 30 members, but throughout history this community has played a very important role in the development of the Dubrovnik Republic
We'll start off with a lovely drive along a gorgeous panoramic road, with spectacular views of the Dubrovnik coastline and Riviera. Once we arrive you'll enter the walled city, also known as Old Town. After entering the town, you will walk to the old ghetto area and visit the synagogue which is one of the most cherished sites of Sephardic culture in the world.
We'll also stop in at the small museum that chronicles the Jewish community in Dubrovnik and other religious articles, including an ancient Torah brought to Dubrovnik by the city's first Jewish residents
Returning to the Stradun, (main street) you will view other fine buildings from the outside: the Sponza Palace, notable for its column courtyard with elaborate stone carvings; the Church of Saint Blaise; and Onofriou's Fountain.
At the end of the walking tour, free time will be available to tour the Old Town before you visit Dubrovnik's fascinating Jewish cemetery in the Boninovo Disctrict just outside of town. It was founded in the late 19th century and has about 200 tombstones, including some old ones transferred there from an even earlier cemetery.
At the end of the half day tour transfer back to the ship.
