Day One
From Edinburgh we will make our way via lonely Rannoch Moor to beautiful Glen Coe. There is a stop in the heart of the Glen before heading for Fort William. Drive through the Great Glen to Loch Ness, where we can visit Urquhart Castle and enjoy a monster spotting cruise (optional). It is a short drive to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands and our home for tonight. The stay in Inverness is unescorted.
Day Two
Today we enjoy a full day excursion to the beautiful island of Skye. We’ll make a stop at Eilean Donan Castle, perched on its island at the head of Loch Duich. You will marvel at the views when we stop at this most picturesque of castles. Soon we’ll be crossing “over the sea to Skye” and driving in the shadow of the towering Cuillin Hills to Portree, a picturesque fishing port which is the island’s main town. After free time we will return to the mainland and return to Inverness
Day Three
We make the drive to the attractive fishing port of Ullapool where we join the modern ferry for the Outer Hebrides. On our arrival in Stornoway we will meet our local guide who will take us on a tour across the island to the rugged Butt of Lewis where a lighthouse stands guard warning passing ships of the nearby rocks. Next we will make a fascinating visit to the Arnol Blackhouse Museum. A traditional blackhouse was a combination of home, barn and byre and it is hard to believe that this example was vacated as recently as 1964.
Day Four
This morning we visit the astonishing Callanish Standing Stones. Archaeologists believe that these 15-foot stones were placed here by Neolithic people sometime during the period 3,000 and 1,500 BC. The site is rated second in importance only to Stonehenge. There is some free time in Stornoway before we catch the afternoon ferry for the mainland. On our arrival in Ullapool we will be met by our guide and transferred to Inverness.
Day Five
There is an excursion through the scenic Black Isle followed by free time in Inverness before joining our motorcoach for the tour south. Our route will take us to the gentle Spey Valley then through the dramatic scenery of the Drumochter Pass. As we drive through Glen Garry look out for imposing white-washed Blair Castle. There will be a stop for afternoon tea then the rolling Tayside countryside will guide us to Perth and onwards to journey’s end in Edinburgh. |
