Depart for an excursion to the medieval town of Porvoo. The Porvoo parish and the church originated in the 13th century. The church was first built of wood, later of stone. It was founded high on the hill to dominate the town. Six towns were established in Finland during the Middle Ages. Some of them grew to be towns without any official order having been issued. This was the case with Porvoo, which got the town rights after Turku, in the 14th century. The Town Prospered through trade. The medieval plan, the red ochre sheds, the cobblestone streets and the idyllic courtyards make Old Porvoo a unique historical town environment. The red ochre shore houses remind us of a past close to the sea and the wooden milieus of the daily grind, both before and now. Porvoo was known as a trading place already in the 13th century and is Finland's second oldest town, founded in the 14th century. Old Porvoo is closely connected to the history of Finland. This is where the Porvoo Diet was convened in 1809. The present area of Old Porvoo is about 18 hectares. There are 167 lots, where 250 dwellings and 300 outbuildings and domestic houses are situated.
The present population in the Old Porvoo district is nearly 700 people. Inside visit of the Cathedral is subject to availability at the moment of the tour. Return to your Hotel in Helsinki.
